The aim of this blog is to share the knowledge and information about BOP business and other business ideas providing social and global impacts, especially with undergraduate students who are curious about business and social issues. Recently, Business and multinational companies (MNCs) have been expected to solve global issues such as environment, poverty and peace building. However, we students who might be a member of those companies in our future, are rarely involved into this movements. In this blog, with students from all over the world, we try to discuss this movement with introducing ideas which regards business as a tool to solve social and global issues.
Especially, we focus on the notion of "BOP business". BOP, Bottom(or Base) Of the Pyramid means people who are living at the bottom of global ecnomic pyramid. They leive with less that two US dollar per a day, and there are approximately 4 billion people who are regarded as BOP.
BOP business is a new idea of business and development (freedom from poverty) which try to solve poverty through business. BOP business have two asspects. Firstly, from the view of development, BOP business can provide great effects on freedom from poverty because business and companies have finanically and technologically sophisticated capabilities. If they use their ability to solve poverty or other social issues, they can make huge impact to change the conditions. Secondly, from the view of companies, BOP markets can be potentially huge markets which might provide great return in long term. The idea of BOP business show some evidences which tell the possibliity and practical ways to target poeple with ultimately low income, and build the huge profitable markets. Because of these two aspects, BOP business are getting attention from various sectors such as MNCs, samll business, NGO and NPO, Internatinal Organization and Government.
In this blog, mainly the concept, case studies and event information of BOP business will be discussed and interacted. Also, we will show some other possiblities that business can contribute in solving social and global issues, too. We aim to involve students into this discussion. Though there have already been some social network of BOP business, there seems few oppotunities for students to know this idea. Here,anyone who are curious about those ideas will be welcomed to be the author of this blog to discuss and show one's knowlege and opinions.
